Asus EEE PC 900 Netbook – Dining Room Table Reviews

LATEST NEWS: The full review of the 900HA, the successor of the 900, can be found at www.youtube.com . ========================================= Review of the Asus EEE PC 900 mini-notebook from my dining room table. The Ubuntu-EEE screenshots you see in the video are actually from the Ubuntu-EEE Live CD. I did install and thoroughly test Ubuntu-EEE for my review, but had already installed Windows 2000 when I realized I had completely forgotten to record any screenshots of the Ubuntu installation. I can be such a n00b sometimes… :) To install Windows 2000, you’ll have to create a new installation disc with the nLite utility available at www.nliteos.com . You’ll need to include the latest Windows 2000 Service Pack and the drivers from the EEE PC 900′s Windows XP driver disc, otherwise the Windows 2000 installation will fail to start. One of the best tweaks you can perform under Windows is to move the swap file from the primary to the secondary solid-state drive. You’ll have more room for your applications, and there will be fewer read accesses to the primary drive. A correction. One of the sample clips was mistakenly credited as “The Next Great Canadian Prime Minister. The title is actually “Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister”, which you can find at www.cbc.ca .

Yes, there is a microphone, but it sounds like crap.

Get a 900 that’s equipped with a proper mechanical hard drive, and not this model with the SSD drive unless you can purchase a better performing after-market SSD drive. Even with a better SSD drive, this model is still severely underpowered due to its Celeron processor. The models equipped with the mechanical hard drives use the better performing Atom processor.

Get a netbook with a mechanical hard drive. AVoid netbooks with SSD drives, they’re just too slow and too limiting.

Check out my 900HA and 1000HE reviews. You should be able to find the 900HA for about $300 or less. There has been a lot of price drops lately.

man i’m so confused, my birthday’s coming and i’ve been convincing my dad to buy me a netbook, after searchin everywhere, i found an Asus eee pc 900 for $ 200 and an Aspire One for $ 280, what should I buy??

i’ve been installing Ubuntu for a couple years and installing it and XP from a USB pendrive for months at my work. So, remobing Xandros or Linpus is not a problem.

    Pleeeease, help me decide!!!

In that case, the 900HA should be fine. The only missing components when compared with the 1000HE are Wi-Fi Draft-N and Bluetooth, two components that I’ve yet to use on any of my other notebooks that have these features.

i cant spend more than 300$ really. the projector i would be using is the 3m pocket projector. the pc im looking to get as of now is a 900ha, as far as i can tell it does what i need it to do; counterstike 1.6, maplestory, diablo 2, starcraft, itunes, googleearth, photoshop, etc. im not looking to play crysis or half life 2 on it, or using it as my main media player.

You’re plugging it into a projector? In that case, forget the Eee PC line and get yourself a desktop computer equipped with a dual core processor. The Atom processor simply isn’t powerful enough for your needs, especially if you plan to watch high definition movies.

If size is that critical an issue for you, then check out the XPC line at Shuttle. 8 inches wide, 8 inches high, 11 inches deep, and powerful enough for 1080p material.

well the reason im asking is, (and ive been doing alot of research in forums) that i want a Eee with the best performance. i do not care about the screen or keyboard or battery life, because i will be using a projector as an external monitor, external keyboard/mouse, and will be plugged in all the time/stationary in my room. the fact that its small, gives me the added bonus of portablilty, that my regular desktop doesn’t. but performance comes first b4 all those otherthings.

It’s a toss-up between the 900HA and the 1000HE. The 1000HE has extra features and a longer battery life, but it’s bigger and weighs more. The 900HA is light, less expensive and extremely portable, but the small keyboard can be a bit of a problem for people with big fingers. Whichever one you choose, the other one will most likely be second best.

I’m thinking of getting the 1000HE in blue if I can’t find a long life battery for the 900HA.

I just got one on Thursday and agree with you on almost everything. The screen on mine is surprisingly good and not dim at all. Also, the volume on mine is amazingly good and I actually need to turn it down for headphones/earbuds lest I blow my eardrum. I too run Windows XP on mine. It was installed onto the 5 gig by a friend with plenty of room on the 15 gig side to run and download nicely.

Thank you or the tip on the firefox memory cache. That is great advice.

You can use an external CD drive in the same manner as an internal CD drive, including when booting the machine. It’s just the mobility part that takes a hit.

COD:WAW however will most likely never run properly. It’s way too recent, and most likely exploits rendering techniques way too advanced for ANY netbook out there.

No, and even if it was fast enough to run the game their would be no way to install it because their is no CD drive.
