@marquise02119
it is not recommended to download stuff to the recovery drive as the recovery drive has backup system files for your operating system (e.g. Vista), if your operating system messes up, you need that recovery drive to reinstall the OS instead of using a DVD, it is also recommended that you use a portable HDD to store your backup files, i hope this helps

w8 you cant upgrade home basic into windows 7?!
January 13th, 2010 17:46
i think another way to do it (if you dont have windows vista yet) you can buy the wndows vista computer with the windows 7 and upgrade it then you can ad your apps and that stuff (i think it is easier because you dont have to get the stuff that you downloaded back)

Should I download Windows 7 from the Dell website? Oh and one more question. Since I have no more hard disk but my recovery drive what should I do? It has a warning saying do not download on the recovery drive but that is the only one I have. Where should I put my backup files
January 13th, 2010 18:13
Yeah. I thought of that at first, but my problem/question is more complex than what a disc trial would tell me.

put in the CD you should now have 2 of them one 32 bit and one 64 bit. one of them might not work. it should then guide you through the rest
January 13th, 2010 21:21
put in both CD’s one of your CD’s should say your pc is uncompatiable with this version or something like that that would mean that bit will not work on your pc.

i have a windows vista home basic computer. i have got a new windows 7 ultimate cd. my windows vista home basic is too slow and i did not make recovery disc so i have bought a new windows 7 ultimate cd. but its not installin. how do i install it.
January 13th, 2010 22:41
Thank you. That’s what I was fearing. I’ll plan on going the clean install route.
January 13th, 2010 22:59
Is most probably that you will need a clean install. Versions X32 to X64 are Pretty different and should not support an upgrade of that kind in the “easy” way.

I have a question to anyone who knows for sure. I want to switch from Vista Home Premium 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. My PC is designed to run 64 bit _ I have no idea why it was supplied with 32 bit Vista. So can I do an “in place upgrade” as demonstrated here? Or do I have to do a “clean install?”

while upgrading from vista to 7, you can go from existing to the ‘existing/higher-end’ version. but fresh install is required if you do upgrading to ‘lower-end’ version.

@vepulan7 microsoft made it so you can only upgrade to the same version you have so if you have professinal you need to upgrade to windows 7 professinal
January 14th, 2010 01:28
I think you have to buy the full version, Upgrade only works for Home Premium > Home Premium. Clean install is just an option.
