Stream media to PS3 with Windows Media Player 12 & Windows 7

A tutorial showing how to stream media such as pictures, music and videos to your PS3 with Windows Media Player 12 & Windows 7. If you cannot see the “Turn on media streaming with HomeGroup…” option, click “Stream” then “More streaming options… “. A new window will appear, in that window you will see a link to “Choose homegroup and sharing options”, click that link. Then you will see the options/ check boxes of what you would like to stream on your network, as shown in the video. Follow the video on from that point. THIS IS WHAT THE MEDIA FOLDERS LOOK LIKE: i46.tinypic.com or like this i48.tinypic.com IF YOU CANNOT SEE A FOLDER INSIDE ONE OF YOUR MEDIA FOLDERS: On your PS3, once you have clicked on the streaming icon (it should look like a Windows icon in a white box), you should see folders such as Music, Videos & Pictures. When you have opened a folder (eg. Music) you should see a bunch of other folders, but one of those folders will be called “Folders”. Inside that folder are all the other folders inside your media folders such as Music, Pictures & Videos. NOTE: On your PS3, streamed picture files must be accessed from the Photo column on the XMB, streamed audio files must be accessed from the Music column on the XMB and streamed video files must be accessed from the Video column on the XMB.

    THANK YOU!!! Worked like a charm for me, although the layout of some of the settings was slightly different on my PC. Your vid still shows what to look for, which is VERY helpful! No need to turn off the firewall for me, and that reset trick really helps… also is good to try resetting if you’ve set-up your libraries in WMP and they aren’t picking up on the PS3 yet.

    @Joelsol4

    I was about to reply to you when I saw your comment above. I just searched my hard drive with file types of “.wmdb” and delted them all. Apparently, WMP12 has a lot of trouble updating sometimes and this fixed my problem.

    What fixed yours is WMP12 considered those new files as “new” because they were in a new directory. You could have pulled them out, put them somewhere temporarily, then moved them back to their original location and that might have worked too.

    ok i got it! for those having problems updating the files you place in windows media player to stream to the ps3 u need to place the file in the folder where windows media player keeps its sample files for example if you have a sample video that came with media player and it streams to the ps3 RIGHT click the file on the windows media player then go to open file location once that folder opens add the video file u want to stream to the ps3 into this folder and then it should stream to the ps3

    Hey dude, thanks for the vid :D

    Havin a small problem though. I got the streaming to work but since then I’ve added some more media to the folders. For some reason the PS3 isn’t picking up the new additions. I’ve tried restarting, re-syncing, disabling streaming, disabling firewalls, updating the media in WMP and nothin has worked so far.

    Any ideas?

    most don’t need the firewall to be turned off. Like mine, try skipping the firewall step first then if it doesn’t allow sharing… go turn it off

    @MrMala83
    You can try streaming with your firewall on, if it works, it works. If it doesn’t work with your firewall turned on, you can try turning on UPnP on your router and then try again, but i won’t go into how to enable UPnP as it is different for different types of routers (google it). So, if it doesn’t work with your firewall on, you disable your firewall when streaming media, then turn it back on when you have finished streaming.

    works me, much appreciated. but i have one question for anyone who knows. say im putting large files to stream to my ps3, like a season of heroes to be exact. is there any way to do it instantly? or must i always wait the 3-5 minutes for it to copy to my videos folder? there is a program called ps3 media server, its an amazing program no doubt, and i always used that when i used to have XP, but now that im on 7, ive learned how to use this, but with ps3ms, it added stuff to the ps3 instantly.
