Running DOS Programs on Windows XP, Vista, W7 (Windows 7) With DOSBox
Update: This works with Windows 7 W7. With Windows Vista 64, old DOS programs do not work. Also, Windows XP has problems running some DOS programs. There is a solution to this problem called DOSBox. DOSBox can run DOS programs in the Vista and XP environments. DOSBox can be downloaded for free at dosbox.com and there is a link to the program on the SchoolFreeware website. Schools and individuals can use DOSBox to run their old software and DOS games. This tutorial shows how to get, install and use DOSBox. everything works fine except when i get to the “olddos” part is that command specific to your computer or is it universal?

@CongDanhVip Yeah, I found that out after a bit of messing around with it. Thankfully you can just drag the deal over the DosBox icon and it mounts the thing for ya since I have no clue how to do that manually.

@rambo8107 I can do this in DOSBOX, maybe there are some problem with your computer,OS,keyboard or motherboard. Reinstall your OS or change theboard or buy the new computer!

@ThePhilliephan26 That seems odd to me. It sounds more like a Windows problem than a DOSBox problem. What OS are you running? Have you tried running antivirus and malware software? PC Tools has a nice free antivirus program and malwarebytes offers free malware software.

@SchoolFreeware Thanks, but I have a more urgent problem now–I start getting the BlueScreen error when I try to start up my computer. I removed DOSBox and the program that was causing the problem but that hasn’t helped. I’ve also done a System Restore and a Startup Repair. Any thoughts?

@ThePhilliephan26 On DOS the Autoexec.bat runs programs on start up. The Autoexec.bat can be found in your z: folder. The Autoexec.bat can be modified in the DOSBox preferences file found in the DOSBox directory on your computer. It can be edited with NotePad. – Hope This Helps

How do you change the DOS box code if you already have it set up to run another program? When I open DOS box, it runs my program automatically. Do I need to install it again?
June 4th, 2010 17:20
@SchoolFreeware awesome!! Thank you for your help =)
June 4th, 2010 17:39
@aeomus26 Try this command
mount d e: -t cdrom
If your CD drive has a different letter than e, then change e to your CD drive’s letter.
The d drive on DosBox will be your CD drive
Hope this works

Try typing:
MOUNT C C:
Or:
MOUNT C C:Directory1…
June 4th, 2010 20:19
I get that message when I try to mount a folder that does not exist. Make sure that the programs folder is created (or placed) within the DOSBox Folder and try the command mount c: programs again.
June 4th, 2010 21:05
when i tried to do mount c: it says illegal or doesnt exist.
