How do i install Windows 7 over Vista without losing all my data?

I have a PC that has vista installed on it, it does not boot up but just shuts down when it reaches the windows screen. I want to install windows 7 on it to rid the problem but i do not want to lose my files. Is there any way of doing this?

Go to boot manager and select boot from cd and choose a clean install. The boot option is selected upon startup and you have to look at the bottom and find the F key to select boot options.

Well just do an upgrade from your Windows Vista and it would keep all your files. (Do not do clean install)

An upgrade might work, or 7 might crash for the same reason Vista is crashing. Save all your data (use BartPE or UCBD if you want a Windows boot for saving, or any Linux Live CD), then clean install 7 and restore your data. It might take a little longer (a little – 7 crawls when bringing over the Vista programs and data) but you’ll have a stable installation.

Use the right upgrade, if you have Vista Home premium, use the Windows 7 Home premium upgrade, if you have Vista Business use the Windows 7 Professional upgrade and if you have Vista Ultimate use the Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade.

You should probably plan to fresh install, or else the problem may well carry into Windows 7 sooner or later.

You can use another computer to access the drive and get your files off first.

if you’re using vista, you can perform an in-place upgrade. This means that it will install a new OS (windows 7) over the old one while putting all the old files on your computer into a folder called “windows.old”. When turning on your computer, there will be a screen that says to press a certain button for setup or BIOS settings or something like that. This will take you to the Bios menu. Use your keyboard to navigate to boot options. It will have a first, second , and third boot option. Make sure that one of them is to boot from cd/dvd drive (but also make sure one of the ones after that is the hard drive). then restart your computer, pop in the windows 7 dvd, and wait for it to load. it will ask you to press a button to boot of the dvd. Then click upgrade install and follow the steps to install windows.

Instead of installing it over windows vista you should be able to install it next to windows vista so after you restart you can choose witch one to load. To do that I think that you have to push F12 as soon as the screen shows anything. Then you boot it off the CD.

If you can perform an upgrade installation your files and programs will remain intact. Here are instructions for doing so: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Installing-Windows-recommended-links
