Enable Network Shares on WD TV Live & Windows 7 Ultimate x64

My wireless mic was about dead. I’ll rerecord the audio later. ANONYMOUS LOGIN TO ON On the WD TV Live go into Network Settings and verify Auto login to network share – On. @dirtyvu I understand your concern. I use Media Center to push content to several other electronics including an X360. You can enable the media server to do that if you run into issues with these settings.

Thanks for this. I spent a couple days trying to get the share to work and then I followed this video along with the instructions for the regedit and now it works like a charm. Thanks again!

this post looks fabulous. will try it out ASAP. but i have some questions. i also have a 360 as well as other Windows 7 machines. so i’m wondering how the aspects such as windows media extender (windows media center) and homegroups are affected by your changes. because homegroups has made sharing super easy. all my windows 7 machines see each other very easily. also, i love my windows media center and how it works with my 360. so can you provide some advice? vunguyensaba@yahoo.com

@Joostered Thanks for the thumbs. I still enjoy hearing about success stories. Been using my WD for about 6 months now. I have 3 of them and have canceled my cable. I’m going to do another video for PlayOn Media Server here in a few days. Hopefully that will help people get away from the bullshit prices the cable companies are demanding for what should be a very low priced service.

Hey thanks so much for the video and and the regedit fix. I do use x64 but it still won’t work. I can watch youtube and flickr so I know it’s connected.

I have it connected wireless using DWA-140 V1.30 (supported wireless adapter).

Symptom: When I go into video -> network shares and click enter NOTHING happends I tried every possible button but no reaction. As I said Youtube reacts just fine.

I also tried setting it up wired and it had the same problem!

figured out the problem. If play’s on Wi-Fi (mine is 802.11n, faster than a wired connection) didn’t work. Only on wired connection…. My wired is 100mb/s. The 802.11n is 144mb/s. Only on wired worked…. But the great is that worked!

@camboy1132 cont2… once I have some more information regarding your scenario I can better assist but to start with, I’d check your NIC driver to be sure it’s up-to-date, video driver (yes video) and your router firmware to make sure it’s up-to-date. Once you’ve done that you can start eliminating hardware one at a time. After that you can measure latency from and to the WD / computer.

First thing though, I’d try another WD just in case. ;) Let me know the outcome.

@camboy1132 cont… what hardware do you use other than the WD? Have you tried another WD unit? Are you using Windows 7 or another operating system? The codec on the WD TV Live can play the following formats with no problem. I have tested each numerous times.

Formats include: ISO, IMG, MKV, AVI, MPG, VOB, MP4, MP3, WAV, M2K. Again, no problems with video or audio playback. I also checked the WD forums and my contact at WD and they have had no reports of format incompatibility or codec.

@camboy1132 First, I have to say you probably have a piece of bad hardware. The WD unit, router, NIC, cable, etc. If you can watch video flawlessly like all of us here can and cannot on the WD that tells me there is definitely an issue with streaming or hardware, not with the way the WD is constructed or with codec on the device.

Now, to assist you I need to know a few things. What type of file or files are you trying to play? How were they ripped or downloaded?

I got lots of Movie Play Back issues ,movies will not play correctly with errors. HD movies wont play smoothly & spuders. as we can clearly see its codec issue.what we need to do is to change alter the codec pack.some how alter the Computer version and make it compatible with the play firmware. Community Codec pack or Klite codec pack as we can see the computer dose not have no issues when playing form pc with these codec packs.WD TV also live needs to use different firmware codec on player .

@mmesa005 you are correct. WD TV Live passes DTS audio over HDMI so there is no need to convert. That is one of the very large differences between the WD TV & adding the word Live.

I have a Gen 1 WD TV HD and I use a Toslink connection to my AV Receiver to decode DTS audio. The Gen 2 / Live can pass DTS Audio via HDMI.

@roadcoach I don’t play with Torrents. Torrents = trouble – Try using Limewire if you need to use torrents. It’s lighter weight than Vuze.

Had another problem recently. If running Vuze (bittorrent client) WDTV Live stopped working. Had to close Vuze and then go into hibernate mode and then out. Then WDTV Live worked again.

@thecomputerguyonline: Finally got this figured out. It appears that using the same computer name and user name on Vista 64 previously, then upgrading (fresh install, copied all pertinent files to external drives beforehand) to Windows 7 (with the same computer/user name) confused matters with Win 7. Basically it would not allow me to take ownership of files and folders within the folder I was trying to change as per the video. It would constantly deny access to individual (continued)

Awesome. This actually works like a dream. Load up the 720p version on You Tube in full screen mode and just follow the instructions. Tried loads of other stuff including registry hacks. Nothing worked but this worked like a charm. Thanks for bothering to upload it all – you’re a gent

I have been watching the YOUTUBE video on how to enable network shares with WDTV Live and Windows 7.
My question is: is there any where on the internet that has the dialogue available to print out on a printer so that I can read the instructions while inputting the desired info on the computer?

    best, Aaron
