This was a quick video we took to see how Ubuntu 9.04 64BIT performed with the following open: – 20 Firefox Windows – Open websites include: ubunut.com, cnn.com, cnbc.com, foxnews.com, bbc.com, msnbc.com, youtube.com, yahoo.com, a Zimbra Ajax webmail system, and any remaining windows were fullscreen and open to google advanced search. – A windows XP Vmware Workstation Virtual Machine running in Unity mode with the following applications open: Microsoft Word to a new blank document, Microsoft Publisher with a full page document opened, Internet Explorer 7 with a HD youtube video playing with sound. – Other Ubuntu / Linux Applications open / loaded include: KDE 4.2.2, Konsole, Gnome-DO, Beagle, aMSN w/ chat window open, 3 sep panel’s across bottom of lower screens, 2 Dolphin sessions, and system monitor. – And just for the heck of it – Kung Fu Panda playing at DVD resolution using VLC from a NFS share on the network. All this and all 4 CPU’s were below 50% usage average or less, and memory usage was 1.6GB average or less outa 8GB. Go Ubuntu and say goodbye to Windows forever!
This series of three videos shows how to install Ubuntu Linux Server in VMWare Server, a free application for Windows (XP or Vista) that will allow you to run a full Linux operating system in a window on your desktop. These techniques are demonstrated on Windows but also generally apply to the VMWare Fusion for the Mac. Why do it? To experiment, to learn, and for instructional purposes. The video is divided into three sections due to length limitations; view all for the complete instructions. Ubuntu Linux Server version 8.04 is a free download at www.ubuntu.com Total running time is about 27 minutes. To install Ubuntu Desktop, see the companion series Install Ubuntu Desktop in VMWare Server.
LATEST NEWS: The full review of the 900HA, the successor of the 900, can be found at www.youtube.com . ========================================= Review of the Asus EEE PC 900 mini-notebook from my dining room table. The Ubuntu-EEE screenshots you see in the video are actually from the Ubuntu-EEE Live CD. I did install and thoroughly test Ubuntu-EEE for my review, but had already installed Windows 2000 when I realized I had completely forgotten to record any screenshots of the Ubuntu installation. I can be such a n00b sometimes…
To install Windows 2000, you’ll have to create a new installation disc with the nLite utility available at www.nliteos.com . You’ll need to include the latest Windows 2000 Service Pack and the drivers from the EEE PC 900′s Windows XP driver disc, otherwise the Windows 2000 installation will fail to start. One of the best tweaks you can perform under Windows is to move the swap file from the primary to the secondary solid-state drive. You’ll have more room for your applications, and there will be fewer read accesses to the primary drive. A correction. One of the sample clips was mistakenly credited as “The Next Great Canadian Prime Minister. The title is actually “Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister”, which you can find at www.cbc.ca .

A Tutorial: Ubuntu Linux is a completely free open-source operating system that has many useful features and abilities, and this guide will show you how to try this new OS without harming your Windows system, and it only takes five minutes to learn! This guide will show you how to: -Download and burn the Ubuntu image to CD -Shrink the Windows installation to make room for Ubuntu -Boot to the Ubuntu live CD and begin the installation process -A step-by-step description of what options to choose and when during the installation, including how to manually partition Ubuntu on your hard drive This guide was created for Windows Vista (using the disk manager to shrink Windows and make room for Linux) but should work with Windows XP as well as any version where you can shrink the partition through the control panel. This guide was designed for systems with a single hard disk, but may be used on a multiple hard-disk system with minor changes.
