Question by dave_g_28: How do repair windows? I have Windows XP Home edition, Dell Dimension 4600?
Someone fried my computer from a Yahoo chat room. Afterwards, whenever I try to start my computer I get an error message saying “Unmountable_boot_volume”, and to start in safe mode, and also something about “techinical info ***stop: 0X000000ED (0X83B00C08, 0XC0000032, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). I was told that I would have to use my OS restore disk to repair windows, and to put the disk in the cd-rom drive and restart and it would automatcally boot up using the disk. It doesn’t. In order to get it to read the disk, I have to hit F12 to get to the boot menu, and then choose “IDE CD-ROM Drive”, and hit enter when promted to “boot from disk”. Then it gives me 2 choices: to start windows now, or to press “R” to repair a windows installation using the repair console”. When I choose this option, it takes me to the repair console with a DOS prompt, but there are no commands to “repair”. I was able to scan the hard drive, and did indeed find an error, but don’t know how to fix it.
I isolated the missing or corrupted file, and it’s a system32.dll file. How do I copy this from the startup disk?

Best answer:

Answer by gecko_au2003
you can use the option fixboot or fixmbr

If you have any data that you need to retrieve before doing so I would advise that you try a repair install first or use a knoppix live disc / linux live disc.

Other then that do the fixboot command and then try and restart without the xp disc or any other disc and set the hard drive as the first or second boot device .

If you need more help email me

Very best reply:

Answer by cajunspike1959
You do not have to.
If you have a legal replicate of xp pro and a legitimate cdkey, just stick the disk in.
Do an ‘upgrade’ when it asks. All your configurations and files will nonetheless be there.
If it doesn’t give you an upgrade alternative, then just choose new installation. That will kill home anyway.
